The Veneration of Brother Meinrad

On the Road to Beatification

The reputation of the saintliness of Brother Meinrad within the Community of The Monks of Einsiedeln, as well as the wish of the faithful, led Abbot Ignatius Staub to initiate the beatification process already in 1939. After 80 meetings, the Episcopal Information Gathering Process ended on May 17th, 1940.

The Congregation of Rites approved the few writings left by Brother Meinrad on May 27th, 1941. On August 18th, 1941, the burial chamber in the Abbey crypt was opened, and the mortal remains of Brother Meinrad were laid to rest in a new Tomb of Honor one month next to the side of the Chapel of Our Lady, so the tomb could be accessible to the faithful for prayer.

Only 35 years after his death, Pope John XXIII officially recognized the Degree of Heroic Virtues of Brother Meinrad and bestowed upon him the title of “Venerable Servant of God”. This solemn declaration by the Holy Father was the first step toward beatification and the highlight of the provisional conclusion of the process, but as for official Beatification, a miracle is still required.

It does seem that Brother Meinrad continues to do good works with his customary willingness he exhibited throughout his earthly life. But the entire Community of the Benedictine Abbey of Maria Einsiedeln and many others who venerate him, are awaiting prayerfully the miracle which will fulfil the strict criteria required to obtain his beatification.

By reporting a special grace anyone may have received through the intercession of Brother Meinrad to us, everyone will help to bring about the beatification of Brother Meinrad, step by step (see contact info below). All that is still needed, is a miracle obtained through the intercession of The Venerable Servant of God, which cannot be explained in medical terms. Therefore, it is of vital importance that Brother Meinrad be invoked to intercede on behalf of as many different intentions as possible by as many of the faithful as possible. If you know of anyone in your own life who is engulfed by the vicissitudes of life, or a particularly fearful diagnosis, or has any other intentions and needs for which prayer is needed, please tell them about Brother Meinrad and encourage them to pray to him!

The beatification process requires two Religious to be in charge: One is the so-called Postulator, a priest who lives in Rome, and the other is a Vice- Postulator, who is either also a priest, or a Brother of the Benedictines of Maria Einsiedeln, who is responsible for the veneration of Brother Meinrad here at the Abbey of Einsiedeln, and who is also responsible for all correspondence and documentation of granted prayer-requests that arrive at the Abbey.

Monsignor Dr. Hans-Peter Fischer, the Postulator in Rome, and our own Brother Alexander Schlachter, OSB, as Vice-Postulator are currently filling these positions.
